Our Commitment: tone.io's desktop application works completely offline. Your videos and translations never leave your computer. Signing in only requires a phone number, verified once - we don't collect an email address or password.
Information We Collect
Sign-In (via AlderCard)
Signing in is handled by AlderCard, a separate identity service. When you sign in, AlderCard collects:
- Your phone number
- A one-time verification code sent via Twilio, our SMS provider, to confirm the number is yours
- A unique account identifier, used to recognize you on future sign-ins
We do not collect or store an email address, a password, or any billing information as part of sign-in.
Payment Information
tone.io is currently free to use, with no subscription or payment required. We do not collect or process any payment information at this time. If paid plans are introduced in the future, this policy will be updated before any payment information is collected.
Desktop Application
The desktop application:
- Works completely offline after installation
- Processes all videos and translations locally on your computer
- Does not send your videos, subtitles, or translation data to our servers
- Connects to the network to complete sign-in, check for app updates, and report basic usage information - your account identifier, your most recently used language, and whether a translation succeeded. This never includes your videos, subtitles, or translation content
How We Use Your Information
We use the information collected to:
- Verify your identity and keep you signed in
- Provide customer support
- Maintain the security of the service
- Understand basic usage patterns - like how often the app is used and whether translations succeed - to improve the product
Data Sharing
We do not sell your personal information. Phone numbers are shared only with:
- Twilio (to deliver the verification code during sign-in)
- When required by law
Data Security
We implement industry-standard security measures including:
- Signed, cryptographically verifiable sign-in tokens rather than stored passwords
- HTTPS encryption for all web traffic
- Regular security updates
